Phileo Project, 2015

As part of the Public Engagement Fellowship, Sara worked with the MECA Faith group on initiating the Phileo Project, in efforts to help meet some of the needs of the homeless population in Portland. The goal of the project was for MECA students to get together to reach out to the homeless community by creating and giving. MECA Faith hosted events and workshops throughout the fall semester, where students got together to learn and create items to be donated to the Preble Street Resource Center. The project encouraged a sence of community and generousity on campus, and resulted with a total of 13 hats, 3 scarves, 1 pair of socks, 29 sketchbooks/journals, and 67 holiday cards. All of the knitted and crochet items were brought to the resource center’s clothing closets, where they were made available for the resource center’s clients free of charge. The cards and books were sent to the Florence House, Preble Street’s women’s facility, where they were given as holiday gifts.
